One of the greatest things about visiting Hawaii Island is experiencing its incredible variety of beaches. Unlike many tropical destinations, the Big Island offers everything from soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water to dramatic black sand created by ancient lava flows. Whether you're looking for world-class snorkeling, family-friendly swimming, sea turtle encounters, or simply a peaceful place to relax, you'll find the perfect beach here.
Frequently ranked among the best beaches in America, Hapuna Beach is known for its wide stretch of soft white sand and crystal-clear blue water. During calm summer months it's ideal for swimming, boogie boarding, and snorkeling near the rocky edges. The beach offers restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards, making it an excellent choice for families.
Located just minutes from Keauhou and our vacation rentals, Kahaluʻu Beach Park is considered one of the best snorkeling beaches on the island. The protected bay is filled with colorful tropical fish and Hawaiian green sea turtles. Calm waters make it a wonderful choice for beginners, although reef shoes are recommended because of the rocky shoreline.
This popular Kona beach gets its nickname because winter waves sometimes wash away the sand completely before it returns during calmer seasons. When conditions are good, it's a beautiful place to swim, bodyboard, or simply relax while watching the sunset.
With powdery white sand and brilliant turquoise water, Kua Bay often looks like something out of a postcard. The water is incredibly clear, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling on calm days. Because parking is limited, arriving early is recommended.
Often called Kaunaʻoa Beach, this crescent-shaped white sand beach offers calm, clear water and beautiful scenery. It's excellent for families and also provides great snorkeling near the rocky ends of the beach. Parking is limited for non-hotel guests, so early arrival is helpful.
One of the most photographed beaches in Hawaii, Punaluʻu's black volcanic sand creates a truly unique experience. Hawaiian green sea turtles frequently rest on the shore, offering visitors unforgettable wildlife viewing opportunities. Please admire the turtles from a respectful distance and never disturb them.
If snorkeling is your priority, Two Step belongs at the top of your list. The water is exceptionally clear and home to vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, spinner dolphins (occasionally), and sea turtles. The natural lava "steps" make entering the water surprisingly easy.
This calm, protected beach is perfect for families with young children. Picnic areas, shade trees, restrooms, and gentle water make it an excellent location for a relaxing beach day.
Hawaii's ocean is beautiful but deserves respect. Always check surf conditions before entering the water. Never turn your back on the ocean, avoid swimming alone, and only enter the water if conditions match your swimming ability. If lifeguards are present, pay close attention to their advice and posted warnings.
